Remediation and autonomous SRE

What is incident remediation?

DataAgent •

Definition

Incident remediation is the set of actions that return a production system to a healthy, verified state after a failure. It covers everything from the first stabilizing step to the final confirmed fix, and it is distinct from detection (noticing the failure) and diagnosis (finding its cause).

Explanation

Most incident tooling measures the time to detect and the time to acknowledge, but the minutes that matter to users are the ones between “we know” and “it works again”. Remediation is that interval. It usually runs as a loop: stabilize the symptom (restart, scale, roll back, fail over), find the cause, apply a fix that addresses it, verify that the fix held, and record what was done. Remediation can be manual (an engineer running commands), scripted (a runbook triggered by an alert), or agentic (software that reads the system’s state, picks an action and executes it under guardrails). In vulnerability management the same word means patching a weakness. Here it always means restoring a running system.

How DataAgent approaches it

DataAgent is built remediation-first: restore service first, run the deep root cause analysis after. Its agent reads the live state of Kubernetes and the cloud services around it, explains the root cause, and produces an ordered remediation plan that can be dry-run before anything executes. Each fault class earns autonomy through verified fixes, inside the guardrails the team sets. Until a class has earned it, a person approves the plan.

Example

A service starts returning 503s after a config change. Roll the deployment back to the previous version so traffic recovers (stabilize). Confirm from the rollout history and the config diff that the new value broke startup (diagnose). Fix the value and roll forward (remediate). Watch readiness and error rate for the next 10 minutes (verify). Attach the diff and the actions to the incident (record).

FAQ

What is the difference between incident remediation and incident response?
Incident response is the whole process from detection to postmortem, including communication and coordination. Remediation is the part of it that changes the system to make it healthy again.
Is a rollback remediation or mitigation?
Usually both. A rollback stops the user impact immediately (mitigation) and, when the rolled-back change was the cause, it also removes the cause (remediation). If the cause is elsewhere, the rollback is only a mitigation and the real fix is still open.
Can incident remediation be automated?
Parts of it already are: Kubernetes restarts crashed containers and reschedules pods on failed nodes on its own. Beyond that, automation is safe when the action is reversible, scoped and verified afterwards, which is why automated remediation is introduced one fault class at a time.
